Each new year, we reflect on the past year’s achievements and start thinking about the things we want to focus on in the upcoming year. These resolutions or goals can help us determine what we will spend our valuable time doing next year.
If your goal is to fix your finances, then most decisions you make during the upcoming year will be based on how much money you’ll be spending. If your goal is to get in shape, you’ll focus a lot of the year on meal prepping healthy meals and going to the gym to follow through with your fitness goals.
This means that it is very important to decide what your main focus of the year will be, so that you make sure your actions align with what your goals are. If your goal is to get your finances together and you don’t even think about them until March, you’re not setting yourself up for a successful year.
Below is a list of 15 common New Year’s resolutions. Instead of trying to incorporate them all into your 2018 goals, try to focus in on the one or two you really want to change this year and then create an action plan to make sure you achieve these very important, life-changing goals this year.
1. Pay Off All Your Debt
This is a big one for a lot of people, including myself. This is a goal that I’ve had on my list for a few years, and while I’ve worked on lessening them quite a bit, I still have the debt and I’m determined to pay it off in 2018. Creating an action plan on how exactly I’ll work towards this goal is essential to getting it paid off.
2. Create and Stick to a Budget
As many of you know, it’s easy to create a budget, but very hard to keep up with it. An action that’s helped me stick to my budget is doing the envelope system, where you essentially use cash to pay for everything after your bills are paid for and once the cash runs out of that specific envelope, you’re done spending in that area for the month.
3. Create an Emergency Fund
An emergency fund is a great goal for every person and family to have. In the case of an emergency, a job loss, or illness, you don’t have to worry so much about the financial aspect because you’ve prepared yourself.
4. Earn Extra Income
Earning extra income can help you in so many different ways. It can help you escape a job you’re miserable at, it can allow you to pay off your debt faster, it can allow you to take more trips with your family, and help you in many more ways! Earning more money can give you more options in life.
5. Get More Sleep
While getting more sleep may seem like an odd goal for the year, prioritizing your quality of sleep can truly help your overall health and happiness. Especially for those who have sleep disorders, working towards remedying this issue can make a huge impact on your life.
6. Eat Healthier
This year, make your health a priority. Focus on eating more fruits and vegetables and consuming less junk food, sugar, and caffeine. Your body and mind will thank you.
7. Live In The Moment
Focus on living more in the moment and not worrying so much about the past and future. Overthinking about the past and stressing yourself out over the future is not productive and will not help you grow. Instead set realistic goals you strive for, and live presently while working towards them.
8. Get In Shape
Another very popular New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and get in shape. So many people have this on their list year-after-year and never achieve the goal. This is exactly why it’s so important to narrow down your goals for the year and do the actions that will lead you to finally achieving this goal and sustaining a healthy lifestyle throughout your life.
9. Make Your Mental Health a Priority
Taking the time to focus on your mental health this year is a great goal to have. Whether through therapy, meditation, journaling, or practicing yoga regularly, it is very important to take time in your day to work on bettering yourself.
10. Quit Smoking and Drinking
Let this be the year you focus on eliminating these habits. A drink once in a while is okay, but really there are no health benefits to doing either. Remind yourself that overcoming these habits will only help your health and overall wellbeing.
11. Spend More Quality Time With Loved Ones
This year, make a point to spend more quality time with the ones you love. Time is something we all reflect upon around this time of year and remembering what and who is most important to you in this lifetime and choosing to spend more quality time with them this year is something you’ll never regret doing.
12. Travel Somewhere New
Explore the world this year. Whether it’s traveling to a new continent, country, state, or simply going to towns nearby you’ve never been, get out and explore a place you’ve never been before. Experiencing the thrill of a new place and seeing how other people live can truly be life changing.
13. Choose To Be Happy
This year, choose to be happy. People think they need to find happiness, but really happiness isn’t something you will one day stumble upon. It is something you need to choose every single day. Wake up every morning and choose to be happy. The effects of choosing it everyday will soon be extraordinarily evident in your life.
14. Learn A New Skill
As humans, it is important that we continuously grow and learn. Expanding your mind by learning a new skill this year will be invaluable in many ways and may even lead you to your new favorite hobby. Do something you’ve always wanted to try without questioning it.
15. Manage Stress
Getting control over your stress allows for a better, healthier, longer life. Stress kills so many people each year and while it seems to be some sort of badge of honor to be overly stressed and worked, it’s not good for any of us. We need to change our mindset around stress and realize it’s never a good thing and we need to work on eliminating it daily rather than just accepting it as a part of life.
