10 Valid Reasons You Absolutely Must Have Hobbies In Your Life

While Netflix is great, it cannot be your sole source of entertainment and consume all of your free time. You have to keep yourself busy with something more. Having hobbies is something some might not even think about, yet it is so important for you as a person to have. There are plenty of valid reasons you absolutely must have hobbies in your life in order for you to grow as a person.

Everyone should have a hobby and shouldn’t feel guilty about investing time, energy, and money into your hobbies. Taking the time to explore the world and finding things you love doing is priceless. Not only will it make you grow as a person, but also it is crucial for your mental health.

Below are some of those valid reasons why having hobbies is an absolutely must in life.

Something To Look Forward To

If all you look forward to doing when you get home from work is watching television, it wont be long before you start questioning if this is all there is to life. While relaxation and decompressing is important, doing nothing with your free time, all the time, can be detrimental to your mental health.

Having something that you look forward to, even if it is only once a week, can immediately give you a sense of purpose. And whether or not your job gives you purpose, you need something that is solely for yourself and your pure enjoyment.

Become a Well-Rounded Person

Learning a new skill helps you become a well-rounded person. It shows that you care about your self-growth and not staying stagnant, doing the same things in life over and over again. Try new things and grow your skills and ability as a person.

Being involved in a multitude of things also is always a great conversation starter. It allows you to pull from many things in conversations with new people and is great at parties.

Distracts Your Mind

Whether you are stressed from your job, a relationship, a tragedy or anything else life has thrown your way, getting caught up in something that makes you temporarily forget and relieves your stress is important.

For many this includes physical activity. Working out is a huge stress reliever for many people. Something calming such as painting or drawing also can be a huge stress reliever.

Brings You Joy

Your hobby doesn’t have to be a clear cut, creative task. It can be literally anything that helps you escape your reality, clears your mind, and brings you joy.

New Opportunities

Most hobbies have some sort of class or workshop you can attend to learn more and further grow your skills. In any class such as this, you’re likely to meet like-minded people that may have other things in common with you.

This can lead to many new opportunities for you. Perhaps they are looking to fill a position at work, or introduce you to another new hobby. The possibilities are endless when meeting new people. Open yourself up to them and all the new opportunities that may come your way.

Expand Social Circle

One of the new opportunities just might be friendship! Meeting like-minded people who enjoy the same things that you do is often times the perfect recipe for a new friendship. If you’re in need of a few new friends or have moved to a new place where you don’t know anybody, starting a new hobby can certainly lead to some new friends.

Exercise Your Creativity

Not all jobs allow for you to exercise your creativity. However, I believe it is important for everyone to exercise his or her creativity, even if you don’t believe you are a creative person.

By trying something new you are exposing yourself to new talents that you may not have known you have. If you struggle in finding something to do, make a list of all the different activities that have ever peaked your interest in the past and finally give them a try.

Have New Goals For Your Life

Working towards our goals and progressing as humans is very important. We need a sense of accomplishment and achievement. A new hobby means a new goal for us, which helps us grow.

Gain Confidence

Having a hobby is a huge confidence builder. If you’re feeling insecure or down about yourself, try out new things until something clicks for you and makes you proud. Overtime you’ll get better and better and find this new sense of confidence you never knew you could have.

Have Fun

Last but not least, a hobby is something you absolutely need in your life to just let loose and have some fun. Everyone needs something in his or her life where there is no rhyme or reason for doing it other than it just makes you happy and allows you to have some fun.

If you haven’t found the right hobby for you, try out something new. Here are a ton of new hobbies to try out: Writing, singing, biking, reading, doing yoga, hiking, working on cars, cooking, playing an instrument, swimming, scrapbooking, organizing your closet, photography, blogging, looking through old photos, working on your budget, fixing your motorcycle, baking, puzzles, cleaning your house, dancing, working out at the gym, running, looking through a magazine, painting, journaling, going to a concert, seeing a Broadway musical, writing a song, going for a walk, designing a room in your house, taking a class, meditating… and many, many more.
